Public Speaking Tips From One of the Best
It’s true that public speaking is challenging. It just so happens that we love challenges! The Equilibrium Marketing Solutions training program teaches us the importance of public speaking in any field, and imparts some of the best practices for giving a powerful presentation. Many of these insights come from Chris Anderson, TED Talks curator.
One of Anderson’s suggestions is to meet the audience where they are. If you are too technical, they may tune out. We like to use basic language and clear analogies to make our points when giving speeches for Equilibrium Marketing Solutions.
According to Anderson, it’s also important to keep the value of a presentation in mind. He says, “If the idea only serves you or your organization, then, I’m sorry to say, it’s probably not worth sharing.” When you prepare for a public speaking engagement, ask yourself why the subject matter is important. What do you want to convey, and how will it help your audience? These insights will help you stay on track.
Body language matters as well. Anderson cites playing with pens, continuously shifting weight, and other unnecessary movements as public speaking no-nos. Better body language includes eye contact, open posture (arms and legs uncrossed), smiling, and some hand gestures.
Multimedia is best kept to a minimum. If you want to use slides, for instance, Anderson says to avoid using them as speaking points or reading them to the audience.
